Temporary Education Assistant: Indigenous Education |

Board Office (Chetwynd and Rural Areas) requires a temporary Education Assistant: Indigenous Education - 27.5 hrs/wk, effective immediately on days when school is in session until last day of classes, June 2022. The successful applicant must meet the criteria of the BCGEU job description. The successful applicant will work closely with the Family Support Worker to connect with families and do home visits. There is a major focus on enhancing the relationship between students, parents, and the school and helping students reconnect with school. This position will support students between home and school; there will also be time scheduled to connect and support students at Saulteau and West Moberly First Nations.
The successful will applicant provide organizational duties as assigned by the supervisor (Family Support Worker). Working with students on short-and long-term goal setting each term, and then meeting with students to reflect on their accomplishments is also part of this role. Helping students in homework club with their class work is also a requirement.
A vehicle is required to transport students and make home visits. Applicant to provide a copy of their current Driver's Abstract. Successful applicant is required to attend monthly meetings in Dawson Creek. Attendance at Indigenous Day celebrations is mandatory. The Board Office requires one (1) permanent Speech-Language Technician, 35 hrs/wk, effective September 7, 2022 on days when school is in session until last day of classes, June 2023.
The successful applicant must have the following qualifications and experience:
- Two (2) year post secondary communicative disorders assistant, rehabilitation or therapy assistant training program OR a combination of pertinent education, previous experience and on the job training under the supervision of a speech-language pathologist (documentation of training and delegation of duties required)
- Certification in national registry;
- Demonstrated knowledge of current evidence-based practices in the field of speech-language pathology;
- Demonstrated understanding of anatomy and physiology of the swallowing, communication and hearing systems;
- Demonstrated understanding of medical stability and those patient/client conditions that can interfere with interventions;
- Demonstrated ability to select, prepare, and present materials consistent with the program designed by a Speech-Language Pathologist;
- Demonstrated ability to work and problem-solve independently while remaining within scope of practice;
- Demonstrated understanding of treatment objectives;
- Demonstrated ability to identify environmental factors that may interfere with patient/client treatment;
- Demonstrated understanding of the psychology and emotional implications of communication and swallowing disorders;
- Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively;
- Demonstrated ability to model specific intervention strategies based on best-practice guidelines;
- Demonstrated ability to relate to, and interact positively with, supervisors, colleagues and the population being served;
- Demonstrated ability to assist the Speech-Language Pathology in meetings with clients, their families and care team;
- Demonstrated willingness to seek appropriate advice from a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist, when necessary;
- Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records (e.g., documenting treatment plan and protocols accurately and concisely);
- Demonstrated use of appropriate oral and written language;
- Possession of a Class 5 BC driver's license and access to a vehicle.
